An Echocardiogram (echo) is a non-invasive ultrasound test that uses sound waves to create moving images of the heart. Why an Echocardiogram Is Recommended

Your cardiologist may recommend an echocardiogram if you have:

  • Symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations

  • High-risk factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or obesity

How the Procedure Works

During an echocardiogram:

  1. You lie on an exam table while a trained technician applies a special gel to your chest.
  2. A transducer (ultrasound probe) is placed on the chest and moved to obtain images of the heart.
  3. Sound waves create detailed images of the heart’s chambers, valves, and blood flow.
  4. The cardiologist reviews the images to assess heart structure and function.

The procedure is painless, non-invasive, and usually takes 30–60 minutes. Some specialized echocardiograms, such as a stress echocardiogram, may involve exercise or medication to evaluate the heart under stress.

What an Echocardiogram Can Detect

Echocardiography provides insight into many heart conditions, including:

  • Heart failure and reduced heart function
  • Valve disease (stenosis or regurgitation)
  • Structural abnormalities of the heart chambers
  • Blood flow issues, including reduced perfusion caused by coronary artery disease
