Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac Catheterization is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and sometimes treat cardiovascular conditions. It involves inserting a thin, flexible tube called a catheter into the blood vessels and guiding it to the heart. This procedure provides detailed information about heart structure, blood flow, and coronary artery health, making it essential for patients with chest pain, coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure, or abnormal results from non-invasive tests such as an EKG or Stress Test.

At Premier Cardiology, cardiac catheterization is performed by experienced cardiologists using advanced technology to ensure safe, accurate evaluation and treatment.

Why Cardiac Catheterization Is Recommended

Your cardiologist may recommend cardiac catheterization if you have:

  • Angina / Chest Pain
  • Abnormal stress test or EKG results
  • Suspected Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
  • Heart attack or history of myocardial infarction
  • Abnormal echocardiogram or heart imaging results
  • Need for interventional procedures such as angioplasty and stenting, Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR), or Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)

Cardiac catheterization allows physicians not only to confirm a diagnosis but, in many cases, treat blockages or abnormalities immediately during the same procedure.

How the Procedure Works

Cardiac catheterization is typically performed in a specialized catheterization lab. The process includes:

  1. Local anesthesia and mild sedation are administered to ensure comfort.
  2. A catheter is inserted into an artery or vein (usually the wrist or groin) and carefully guided to the heart.
  3. Contrast dye is injected to make the coronary arteries visible on X-ray imaging.
  4. Blood pressure and oxygen levels in heart chambers may be measured.
  5. In certain cases, angioplasty and stenting or other interventional procedures are performed simultaneously.

The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes for diagnostic purposes, with longer times if intervention is needed. Most patients return home the same day.

What Cardiac Catheterization Can Detect

Cardiac catheterization provides a detailed view of the heart and blood vessels, helping to detect:

  • Coronary artery blockages or narrowing
  • Abnormalities in heart valves or heart chambers
  • Reduced blood flow to the heart muscle
  • Structural defects or congenital abnormalities
  • Severity of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) for treatment planning

It is a critical tool for guiding both medication management and interventional procedures.

Benefits of Cardiac Catheterization

  • Accurate diagnosis of heart disease and structural issues
  • Immediate treatment options for certain blockages or abnormalities
  • Minimally invasive with quick recovery
  • Guides personalized treatment plans and risk reduction strategies

Recovery and Follow-Up

After cardiac catheterization, patients are monitored for a few hours. Recovery instructions often include:

  • Limiting physical activity for 24–48 hours
  • Keeping the access site clean and dry
  • Monitoring for swelling, bruising, or bleeding
  • Drinking plenty of fluids to flush contrast dye

Your cardiologist will review the results and recommend next steps, which may include lifestyle modifications, medications, or further interventional procedures like angioplasty and stenting, TAVR, or CABG if needed.

At Premier Cardiology, our team ensures you fully understand your results and provides a tailored plan to maintain long-term heart health and prevent future cardiovascular events.
